I see the Light

If you are a Disney fan or have a toddler in the house then chances are you’ve watched Tangled - the story of Rapunzel.

It wasn’t until a few months into my healing from postpartum mood disorders that one of the songs hit me… and hard. I listened to “I See the Light” which is a love song between the main characters, and all I could hear was a love song to my daughter and how much I ached that I watched her first two years of life through a heavy fog of postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety. A love song to my daughter that I am so thankful that at last I see the light and can experience parenting her from a place that I am able to look back and remember milestones that have happened since.

“All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I've been
Now I'm here blinking in the starlight
Now I'm here suddenly I see
Standing here it's all so clear
I'm where I'm meant to be

And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you

All those days chasing down a daydream
All those years living in a blur
All that time never truly seeing
Things, the way they were
Now she's here shining in the starlight
Now she's here suddenly I know
If she's here it's crystal clear
I'm where I'm meant to go

And at last I see the light

And it's like the fog has lifted

And at last I see the light

And it's like the sky is new

And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything is different
Now that I see you”

I talk so much about postpartum mood disorders because my experience with them shaped who I am today, and I share to help others learn from my experience so they might be able to have safety nets put in place (a support system, healthy 4th trimester nutrition, etc.) so they can possibly avoid what I experienced. Wether you can benefit from a little Disney magic, or if by chance you haven’t heard the song I’m referencing enjoy below.
