Pregnancy, Music, & Altered States

Music has such a huge impact on us and our emotions. You can hear a song on the radio and it can take you right back to your high school prom or in middle school when you had the biggest crush.

Have you wondered why music had such a hold on us from our younger years? Why nursery rhymes are so easily still recalled in your 30’s as we teach them to our babies?

From birth until the age of 7 we are in an altered state of reality, a dreamlike state if you will. We can be influenced easily, and are HIGHLY programmable during this time.

Did you know that when we are pregnant we go into an altered state as well? We have the opportunity to be more in tune with our bodies and our baby. We are able to dig deeper into our innermost knowing and I do not think that is a coincidence.

I remember my first trip out of the house alone when I was about 7/8 weeks postpartum and barely going 40mph while cars were zipping around me going the speed limit of 55mph. I felt like I was speeding and could have sworn I was going at least 60mph! Since I was in this pregnancy, birth, and 4th trimester altered state I was not able to navigate at the same pace the rest of the world was going. I was still on the edge of my altered state.

As I write this I am listening to my Thorplings playlist which is made up of songs primarily added during my 3rd trimester with Atlas.

I listened to it as I was nesting in the early Florida summer heat with the windows opened, fresh air blowing, and my last outings with just Evie, and as a family of three.

In the months following Atlas’ birth, I added more songs to it that equally spoke to how I was feeling, and what would set the tone for how I wanted our space to feel.

I listen to this playlist and I am immediately back in our bedroom with Atlas napping on my chest, or Evie mouthing the words and belting out lyrics in her car seat as we drove to visit my parents.

I am transported back to our 5th wheel when we were moving in for the first time and Atlas was just learning to crawl.

If I am having a rough “mom” day I immediately turn this playlist on and it shifts the whole house, for the better as it evokes the calmness that we experienced during these precious times.

10/10 would recommend making a playlist to listen to specifically during your 3rd trimester and again in your postpartum, no matter how far into it you are!
